Last week saw a major milestone reached with the completion of the main flood defence wall at Ickles Lock in Rotherham. The wall, which will protect rail infrastructure and businesses from regular flood events will form a pivotal part of the wider Flood alleviation scheme in Rotherham. Situated in a highly challenging location, wedged between a main rail line and a canal, with a high-pressure Oxygen main buried in the middle, the construction of the wall has proved a highly complex engineering and logistical challenge. Carrying out soil nailing to the rail embankment and augered piling for the wall foundations was difficult enough, before facing the conundrum of how to place nearly 200 m3 of concrete with only towpath access less than 3 m wide.
The completion of these works along with the wider elements of the project, including a sheet piled and masonry faced flood wall, a new switchback bike ramp and canal boat flood protection measures is testament to the site teams experience and drive to succeed.
The now completed wall will also now provide a canvas to the UK’s longest single painted mural, paying homage to Rotherham’s Cultural and Industrial heritage and will be completed over the next 8 weeks…watch this space!!
